Keep Your Poinsettias Merry and Bright with These Simple Tips

Keep Your Poinsettias Merry and Bright with These Simple Tips

With over 40 years of experience in poinsettia care, we can confidently tell you that keeping these holiday beauties thriving is easier than you might expect! The key is understanding that poinsettias are medium-care plants. They like things just right—medium water, medium temperatures, and medium light.

When you first bring your poinsettias home, especially if they’re from The Plant Farm®, be sure to remove the plastic sleeve used for transport right away. This helps them acclimate to their new home and breathe easily!

  1. Watering Wisely

When the topsoil of your plant feels dry to the touch, for a 6 inch pot, we suggest watering your poinsettia with about 6-8 ounces of water. After watering, let your poinsettia sit for about an hour, then drain any excess water. This prevents the roots from sitting in water, keeping them healthy and happy.

If you have a pot cover, make sure to drain the water out of your poinsettia before putting the pot cover back on.

  1. The Perfect Temperature

Poinsettias love a cozy home. They’ll thrive in temperatures between 60-75°F, which is right around your average indoor temperature. So, if your home is comfy for you, it’s comfy for your poinsettia, too!

  1. Keep It Light and Bright!

Poinsettias are adaptable, so you won’t have to worry much about light. They’ll be fine in any part of your home with natural light exposure. If you get your poinsettias from The Plant Farm®, we’ve already done all the hard work to make these beauties holiday-ready, so all they need now is a spot to show off.

Common Mistakes to Avoid:

  • Avoid placing your plant near cold drafts or excessive heat sources, like a radiator.
  • Keep your plant away from temperatures below 50°F.
  • Make sure to avoid getting water on the leaves or blooms.
  • Don’t let your poinsettia sit in water; always drain excess water after an hour.
  • Protect your poinsettia from chilling winds during transport—we advise heading straight home after purchasing!
  • Hold off on fertilizing while your poinsettia is in bloom.

With a little TLC, your poinsettia will stay merry and bright all season long. Happy Holidays!
